March - Hina-Matsuri

Description

My university illustration project for the last semester was a calendar dedicated to Japanese most colorful and significant festivals. I'm quite happy with how the whole thing turned out, and wanted to share if not the calendar itself, but illustrations at least)

Unlike my previous project on slavic mythology, here I'm researching and illustrating the culture to which I do not belong. Therefore, despite checking various sources, I cannot be 100% sure of not making any cultural mistakes either in a discriptions or illustrations. If there are any — please, let me know!)

Hina-matsuri aka Doll's Day aka Peach Festival aka Girls' Day in Japan. Celebrated each year on 3 March, it is most known for displaying platforms with a set of ornamental dolls (hina-ningyō) representing the royal court of the Heian period.

The primary aspect of Hinamatsuri is the display of seated male and female dolls, which represent a Heian period wedding, but usually described as the Emperor and Empress of Japan. These may be as simple as pictures or origami, or intricately carved three-dimensional dolls. More elaborate displays will include a multi-tiered doll stand of dolls that represent ladies of the court, musicians, and other attendants, with all sorts of accoutrements. During Hinamatsuri and the preceding days, girls hold parties with their friends.

The predecessors of hina-ningyō could be Nagashi-bina (lit. "doll floating") ceremonies, which were held around the country, where participants make dolls out of paper or straw and send them on a boat down a river, carrying one's impurities and sin with them. The evolutoin from paper dolls to the wooden/ceramic ones, from throwing the dolls away to keeping them as a traditional decor has gradually led it to the intricate designs of modern hina-ningyō.

During the Meiji period Hinamatsuri was deprecated in favor of new holidays that focused on the emperor's supposed bond with the nation, but it was revived. By focusing on marriage and families, it represented Japanese hopes and values, and as the dolls were said to represent the emperor and empress, it also fostered respect for the throne.

Lovely illustration; I especially like the expressions.
Just two notes: the natural eyebrows are usually shaved, and then false ones painted above; and traditional Japanese cups do not have handles.
